Textiles

Fabric occurs in many different forms throughout Africa. Raw materials are often grown at source, and the material still hand-spun, woven, dyed and decorated in the traditional way. Vegetal fibre Kuba cloth and Kasai velvet from the Congo, Mudcloth from Mali and Kente cloth from Ghana are produced in this manner. Contemporary textiles draw on traditional patterns and colours for inspiration.

     Traditional

Cotton Mudcloth from Mali, Senufo cloth from the Ivory Coast, Kente cloth from Ghana, and Kuba cloth or Kasai velvet from the Congo usually feature in our collection; however we acquire other pieces from time to time. These include Indigo cloth from West Africa, Mossi cloth from Burkina Faso, camel hair blankets from the Tuareg of the Sahara desert, and finely woven Ethiopian stoles.

     Contemporary

Our versatile and durable selection of cushions, throws, table runners and placemats comes in a range of designs to suit any decor. We also stock hand-embroidered cushions, placemats and hangings from South Africa. This initiative provides a good living for eight hundred women.
