Contemporary African Textiles

Contemporary African Textiles

Contemporary textiles in Africa originate from a rich and ancient indigenous tradition of textile production. Many of the designs and patterns on modern fabrics draw on traditional textiles, and the natural and cultural heritage of the area in which they are produced, for inspiration. Trade with other nations has also played a part in forming contemporary textile traditions in Africa.

For example, the brightly printed cottons prevalent in much of West Africa actually originated in Indonesia, and were traded between European and African merchants in the 19th century. Africa has almost entirely appropriated these types of cloths, and the ones produced today are not only produced in Africa, but are distinctly and uniquely African in design.

Here is a selection of contemporary textiles from various countries in Africa; more will be added in the future.
